How it all works

  • Step 1

    Food Production & Retail

Food is produced and sent to the retailer or Hotel/restaurant . Unsold or uneaten food no longer fit for consumption is collected by FSM .

  • Step 2

    Food Waste at our plant

The food waste is brought to the FSM facilities in Co. Meath where it is separated from its packaging. The food is then sent to the A.D. anaerobic digestion and packaging is sent for further recycling.

  • Step 3

    Anaerobic Digestion

Anaerobic Digestion, is a process through which microorganisms break down organic matter. The food is broken down in large sealed tanks by bacteria, (much the same as happens in the human digestive system). This process produces Biogas. The residue is known as digestate and is used as a Bio-fertiliser in Farming.

  • Step 4

    Biogas onwards

The bio-methane gas is then fed into Turbines which produce electricity to be fed directly into the national grid.

  • Step 5

    Agriculture & Electricity

The digestate is used to produce a compost like fertiliser for use in Agriculture.

  • Step 6

    Repeat

The cycle repeats and the process continues on.
