What is Anaerobic Digestion?

How does Anaerobic Digestion work?

Anaerobic digestion is a is an environmentally friendly and efficient waste management practice which promotes a circular economy. It’s a biological process where organic materials, such as food waste, agricultural residues, or sewage sludge, are broken down by microorganisms in the absence of oxygen. This occurs in a sealed, oxygen-free environment known as an anaerobic digester.

During the digestion process, bacteria decompose the organic waste, producing biogas—a mixture of methane (CH₄) and carbon dioxide (CO₂). The methane can be captured and used as renewable energy, while the remaining byproduct, called digestate, is a nutrient-rich material that can be used as a natural fertilizer.

Making a Sustainable Future

Our Reach and Impact
  1. Waste Reduction: AD significantly reduces the volume of organic waste sent to landfills, decreasing the environmental impact of landfills and lowering methane emissions—one of the most potent greenhouse gases.
  2. Renewable Energy: The methane produced can be captured and used as a source of renewable energy, helping businesses, communities, and industries reduce their carbon footprint and reliance on non-renewable energy sources.
  3. Nutrient-Rich Fertilizer: The digestate, the end product of the anaerobic digestion process, is a valuable organic fertilizer that can improve soil health and reduce the need for chemical fertilizers.
  4. Sustainability: AD supports a circular economy by transforming organic waste into valuable resources like energy and compost, contributing to sustainable waste management and energy practices.
  5. Compliance with Regulations: In many regions, strict environmental regulations require businesses to manage organic waste more sustainably. Anaerobic digestion helps meet these regulatory standards, making it an attractive option for compliance.
  6. Greenhouse Gas Reduction: By diverting organic waste from landfills and capturing methane, anaerobic digestion significantly reduces the emission of harmful gases into the atmosphere, aiding in the fight against climate change.

A Comprehensive Service

Going the extra mile

  • Nationwide Coverage: We proudly serve over 4,000 sites across Ireland on a weekly basis, providing reliable and efficient food waste management to a wide range of industries.
  • Waste Reduction: We clean and sanitize over 400,000 wheelie bins every year, diverting significant amounts of waste from landfills and helping businesses meet their environmental goals.
  • Environmental Contribution: Each year, we divert 22+ tons of CO2 from the atmosphere and generate approximately 19,551+ MWh of energy for the Irish economy—enough to power nearly 5,000 homes.
  • Sustainable Products: We also produce 30= tons of fertilizer, turning food waste into valuable resources for the agricultural sector.
